Abstract

Abstract: Fulfillment of obligations (Dharma) in Hindu society in Bali requires significant financial support, so a financial institution is needed that is able to support these needs. The Village Credit Institution (LPD) is a traditional microfinance institution owned by traditional villages that serves Hindu communities in Bali. This study aims to examine LPD as a model of Hindu financial institution through an ethnographic approach with analysis of Hermeneutic and Deconstruction theories. The results of the study indicate that LPD is a Hindu financial institution, because: (1) it was established to improve the welfare of communities and support the role of traditional villages based on Hindu teachings; (2) it operates based on the awig-awig and perarem of traditional villages, not state law; and (3) the practice of intermediary funds (credit distribution) refers to the teachings of Dharmasastra, especially Manava Dharmasastra. LPD integrates the values of Tat Twam Asi, Tri Hita Karana (THK), the teachings of Tri Warga, and the principles of Hindu-Balinese harmony in its financial management, making it unique and relevant as a model of a religion-based financial institution.
